There are 10 identical golden balls, 9 of them have the same weight, only one of them have a different weight. Now, you can use a scale 3 times to find out which ball is different and is it heavier or lighter.![]() Edited by Meow Queen, Sep 5 2010, 02:30 AM.

5 on 1 side, 5 on the other. Take off 1 ball from each side (thus not using up a use of the scale as well), and should they stay unbalanced, you know those two are identical. Continue to do this until the scale levels, and then you will know one of the two balls you took off was not correct (the odd one out). Now simply take the two balls you know aren't correct, and put them on one side, with two real ones on the other, to figure if the unknown ball is heavier ot lighter. Now you just have to divine which is the heavier or lighter one, so take off all other balls and put the two your not sure of on the scale (use 3). At this point, if you know the ball is heavier than your looking for the one thats down, otherwise the one thats up. Presto! I'm sure you have some simple answer, but that one will work, lol. |

wow my head hurts I give up. btw Neal you cheated, you can only use the scale 3 times. Not just put the balls on there 3 times. Edited by Kolby, Sep 4 2010, 02:02 PM.

correct me if u see a flaw X.X Different ball = X Step 1 [1]Place 3 balls on each side, ball No. 1-6. If they are same weight, then X ball is in No. 7-10 [2]Place ball No. 789 on one side and 3 of the normal balls on the other side. If they are same weight, then No. 10 is X. [3]Place X one one side and one of the normal ball on the other and we will know is it heavier or lighter. If No. 789 =/= No. 123, then we know X is either heavier or lighter. [3]Now weight No. 7 vs No. 8 If they are same weight, then No. 9 is X, and we already know if it is heavier or lighter. If they are different weight, then if No. 789 > No. 123, then X is the heavier one. Vice versa. If X is in No. 1-6, then I shall name the heavier three No. 1-3, and the lighter three No. 4-6 Step 2 [2]Take away No. 5-6, and place No. 3 to the other side, so No. 12 vs No. 34 If they are same weight, then X is No. 5/6. Since No. 123 > No. 456, so X is lighter. Weight No. 5 vs No. 6, which ever is lighter is X. If they are not the same weight, because we know No. 123 is heavier If No. 12 > No. 34, then either No. 1/2 is a heavier ball, or No. 4 is a lighter ball. [3]Now we weight No. 1 vs No. 2 If they are same weight, then No. 4 is X. If they are different weight, then which ever one is heavier is X. (Cause we know X is a heavier ball cause No. 123 > normal balls) If No. 12 < No. 34, then No. 3 is X. (Cause No. 123 > No. 456, so X must be heavier and in the No. 1-3 group) Edited by Meow Queen, Sep 5 2010, 02:27 AM.

Test 4 balls on eat side until it's balanced then put the 2 remaining balls (one will b the beavier and one will be the lighter) on the balance and the side that goes down that ball will be the heavier of the 2 and the one that goes up will be the lighter of the 2. |
